Williamson Residence

Interior Design —

A young couple moving uptown from downtown commissioned Reddymade to renovate a sprawling, light-filled, apartment in a pre-war co-op on the Upper West Side. They wanted a cool “downtown chic” vibe.

The 6,000-square-foot residence had to be functional and beautiful, filled with furniture, objects, and art that would not only inspire them but reflect an increasingly sophisticated vision. The apartment was an ideal blank canvas, which had earlier been created out of two apartments.

Reddymade’s design reflects the complex interplay between art, architecture, collectible design and furniture. That meant each room would to be anchored by a particular set of objects and furniture. Carefully selected, they enhanced the proportions and sensibility of each room, yet engaged with the art and design in the rooms about them.

The design concept starts with scale and proportion and is anchored with a custom 50-foot-long metal and natural fiber rug that goes from copper to blue to silver, through the hallway which is the central spine of the space.

The goal was to create a space that was sophisticated and comfortable, that reflected their personalities, and led them on a “voyage of discovery,” through the world of collectible design and art.

The basic color palette throughout the apartment is a series of neutrals. The palette is enhanced by warm woods, textured stone, and gold leaf. The result is an elegant canvas on which to place such varied textures as warm velvet. and to showcase the clients collection of highly-contemporary art. The resultant balance gives the apartment a vibrancy that is engaging rather than  overwhelming.
