The Women’s Building

Architecture —

A finalist competition entry for the conversion of a former women’s prison into a center for the global women’s and girls rights movement, Suchi designed this project with Damyanti Radeshwar, as the Devi group. Envisioned as a celebratory community space, the project addresses complex historic and landmark issues while making a statement in the New York City skyline. Symbolizing the right of women to occupy their space in the world, the new building embraces the existing in ribbons of concrete and glass the flow together to emphasize a vision of collaboration, transformation, and power. Driven by the needs of the community it serves, and sensitive to its context in a corridor of iconic architecture, the design is a visually strong, fluent form.

The heart of the project is the collaborative not-for-profit atrium space, through three floors of the existing building. The complex provides spaces for a health center, childcare services, galleries and a restaurant.

Inspired by the mission to envision a global center for the girls and women's rights movement, the form of the building expresses strength and flexibility as it engages the adjacent historic structure. Fluid concrete ribbons create a signature auditorium space where women leaders can address the public.
